The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
