RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.
The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.
British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."
In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
